Monologues and Songs: Choosing the Right Material

Tips on picking a monologue or song for the Audition
:

  • Try to pick a monologue/song by the same author.
  • Try to pick a monologue/song in the same style.

Finding the Best Material
:
  • Make sure the character is playable for you
    (appropriate age, ethnicity, sex, style)
  • It is good to pick a challenging monologue/song, but not one out of your league.
  • Pick something that shows off your range as an actor/singer.
  • Do not pick famous monologues/songs or from too famous shows.
  • Avoid the great authors unless it is required.
  • Do not pick from monologue books and try to avoid auditioning song books.
  • Pick something interesting that you would want to watch.
  • Be clever with your choices if you can.
  • Don't be afraid to pick unconventional material.
  • MOST IMPORTANTLY: PICK SOMETHING THAT YOU LIKE AND THAT YOU CAN DO WELL!
