Monologues and Songs: Choosing the Right Material

Tips on picking a monologue or song for the Audition:

Unless otherwise noted, choose a monologue or song from a different show other than the one for which you are auditioning.

Try to pick a monologue/song by the same author.

Try to pick a monologue/song in the same style.

Finding the Best Material:

Make sure the character is playable for you
(appropriate age, ethnicity, sex, style)

It is good to pick a challenging monologue/song, but not one out of your league.

Pick something that shows off your range as an actor/singer.

Do not pick famous monologues/songs or from too famous shows.

Avoid the great authors unless it is required.

Do not pick from monologue books and try to avoid auditioning song books.

Pick something interesting that you would want to watch.

Be clever with your choices if you can.

Don't be afraid to pick unconventional material.
